.co.uk In the early 1990s, the Shamen were the undisputed masters of the dance-pop single, with competition coming only from the eccentric but brilliant KLF, who created similarly commercial dance-pop fodder. The Shamen Collection gathers together all of their chart singles, plus early gems and later, less successful releases. In truth, much of the music sounds dated, yet still remains classic pop. Many will remember the number one singles "Ebeneezer Goode" and "Move Any Mountain", but fewer will have heard the dreamy "Possible Worlds" or the William Orbit-produced "Hyperreal." Though essentially a chart act, the Shamen always had one eye on the clubs, and packaged their hits with various underground remixes. The second CD here concentrates on those, from the likes of Todd Terry, Moby, Orbital and Hardfloor. It's mixed together wonderfully by Mr C, and stands the test of time rather better than the first, pop-based CD. --Matt Anniss
